Chapter Philanthropy and Service
We at Zeta Tau Alpha host a variety of events for our national philanthropy, which is Breast Cancer Awareness and Education. Our philanthropy chair, Eliza O'Rear, and chapter members work together to help make these annual events possible!
Big Man on Campus (BMOC)
BMOC is one of our biggest, and definitely one of our most favorite, events of the year! During BMOC week, each Fraternity nominates one brother to be a contestant and to represent their chapter. They then proceed to compete in a week full of preliminary events in order to gain points towards their final score. These preliminary events include a sheet sign competition, a vote on the cutest puppy picture, and a cookout event at the ZTA house. Once the contestants complete these preliminary events, they finally get to compete in the pageant. At this pageant, the contestants perform an opening number, their best formal wear, and a talent of some sorts. The judges, which usually consist of our alumnae, who then select the top 5 contestants to give the final interview question too. At the end of the night, the best men of the night are awarded Mr. Congeniality, People's Choice Award, Best Talent, 1st Runner Up, and, of course, Big Man on Campus!
Pack the House in Pink
We at Zeta Tau Alpha partner with Georgia Southern Athletics, Statesboro Bulloch County Breast Cancer Foundation, and the Statesboro Service League for Pack the House in Pink. Pack the House in Pink is an event we host annually where we pink out the basketball stadium for both the men’s and women’s game to promote Breast Cancer Awareness and Education. During the game, we have several different tables set up with pink lemonade, stickers, and sisters handing out pink ribbons. This year, during halftime, we raffled off a Chick-fil-A basket and all the money used to buy raffle tickets was donated to the ZTA Foundation. This event is a great way to get the Statesboro community and Georgia Southern students involved in our philanthropy.
Think Pink Drink Pink
For our Think Pink, Drink Pink events, we set up tables at various locations on campus in order to raise awareness and educate our peers on the warning signs and early detection procedures for breast cancer. A group of sisters work the table and hand out free pink lemonade and pink ribbons to students and faculty on campus. If donations are given, they go to Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation for Breast Cancer Awareness and Education. It’s extremely fulfilling to see other students on campus drinking pink lemonade and wearing our ribbons on their backpacks, purses, and keychains!
Strawberry Sale
Each year we team up with the Statesboro ZTA Alumnae Chapter to host a strawberry sale. Each member sells flats, consisting of 8 cartons of fresh strawberries from delivered from Plant City, Florida, to raise money for our philanthropy. This is the most successful fundraising event our chapter has ever participated in. In March of 2018, the chapter raised over $75,000 for breast cancer awareness. This event widely expanded the outreach of our Strawberry Sale event, which helped raise awareness for breast cancer to areas all over Georgia.
Pink Power Run
During our ZTA Spring Parents' Weekend, our chapter assists the Statesboro Bulloch County Breast Cancer Foundation each year for the Pink Power Run 5K Run/Walk. Our members help make race packets and gift bags to pass out on the day of the race to the runners. Sisters also help at the event by supporting runners, setting up, and making sure all the runners were hydrated. Our sisters line up throughout the course with encouraging signs to cheer on the runners. Some of the sisters of ZTA and their parents run in the event to show their support for the local survivors. This is a great event to show parents what we at Zeta Tau Alpha do to support our philanthropy and we are excited to continue with this local tradition for years to come and help raise awareness and money for those affected by breast cancer in our community.
Other Service Projects
Here in Zeta Tau Alpha, we make it our mission to serve our community. We have participated in local service events such as Trick or Treat on Greek Street, where our sisters dress up and pass out candy to trick or treaters. We have also recently partnered with Tormenta FC, Statesboro's professional soccer league, where our sisters pass out pink ribbons to raise awareness for Breast Cancer at their games. We have also had the opportunity to participate in Tim Tebow's "Night to Shine" which is a special needs prom our sisters love to take part in. Community service is a very important part of what it means to be a ZTA.
